9th IACC Durban, 9 - 15 October, 1999

IACC Theme: Global Integrity: 2000 and Beyond - Developing Anti-Corruption Strategies in a Changing World

IACC Rationale:
The 9th International Anti-Corruption Conference took place in Durban, South Africa, from 10 - 15 October, 1999. The Conference theme was: Global Integrity: 2000 and Beyond—Developing Anti-Corruption Strategies in a Changing World. As explained in a press release, it was hosted by the South African Minister of Justice and was held at the International Conference Center in Durban. South Africa was chosen as venue for 1999 at the highly-successful 8th IACC held in Lima, Peru, in 1997. This was the first IACC to be held in Africa, and was a testament to the growing concern about corruption among African governments and civil society organisations.

The 9th IACC Commitment sets out the need for all sectors of society to come together to fight corruption, not as representatives of institutions and organisations but as concerned individuals united in a desire to serve humankind.  It sets out the need for an effective fight against corruption, without which the world beyond the year 2000 will be one where poverty is deepened even further; the legitimacy of governments further eroded and human rights abuses proliferate.
